Loreto Normanhurst, a Catholic IBVM high school located in Sydney, Australia, chose Nyumbani to be the beneficiary of their annual Loreto Day fundraiser. Loreto Day is a meaningful community event arranged by the Year 11 students each year. Every student in the school gets involved and raises money for the cause. Loreto Normanhurst already shares a special connection with Nyumbani. Our founder, Sister Mary, is also IBVM and has visited the school twice, in 2001 and 2009. During her visits she recognized the emphasis that is placed on social justice and education, values very apparent in the mission of Loreto Day.
This year the event was hosted the week of June 3rd on Normanhurst’s campus. The feast day began with a liturgy with guest Bishop Peter Comensoli and presentation on Nyumbani Village, put together by the dedicated Year 11 students.
The day continued with Normanhurst’s Loreto Day tradition of “House Stalls”. The stalls, run by students sell delicious baked goods and savory treats like popcorn and pizza. Students and guests pay to play carnival games and partake in art activities. Staff and students from neighboring Sydney schools were included in the festivities, escorted to the events by the older Normanhurst students.
The day also included the Loreto Day Concert, a fan favorite among students. Groups of students performed various singing and dancing routines in front of all the guests. The Loreto Fundraiser also includes an auction where a wide variety of interesting items such as Opera House tickets and organic honey are auctioned to the highest bidder.
Loreto Day is an amazing community event that Nyumbani is honored to be supported by. The Year 11 students did an honorable job of spreading the story and mission of Nyumbani. We are very lucky to have such great supporters, who recognize the importance of community, social justice and giving back. Funds raised from house stalls, donations, the auction and sponsors will go very far to benefit the children of Nyumbani.
The Normanhurst students made a great video summarizing the days events. In many shots, the students can be seen wearing Nyumbani shirts!
