Nyumbani Individual Child and Institutional Support Program
The Nyumbani Children’s Home, located in Nairobi, Kenya, is home to approximately 107 children who have been orphaned as a result of the growing AIDS pandemic. The Nyumbani community creates a safe and secure environment for each child by emphasizing the importance of family style living. Within the home the child gains the understanding of what it is like to be part of a family; for some this is the first and only family that they will ever know.
Nyumbani is unique in that it only accepts children living with HIV/AIDS. We have the facilities to care for and meet the medical needs of this population. Most of the children living at Nyumbani require expensive anti-retroviral medications in order to survive.
The cost of caring for our children grows daily. Nyumbani is a non-profit organization that relies on the generosity of caring individuals like you in order to continue providing a second chance at life for these children. With your help, Nyumbani can offer a brighter future to these children living with HIV/AIDS.

The Needs of the Nyumbani Community:
As you might imagine, meeting the medical, educational and daily living needs of each child requires significant financial resources. Each month it costs approximately $11,000 for general maintenance including salaries to operate the children’s home. Within the Nyumbani community, here are some of our monthly expenses:
• General costs to cover basic needs (e.g., food, shelter, clothing) are $250 per month for each child
• Medical attention for each child (e.g., general check ups, lab work, immunizations, sick visits) is $30 per month for each child
• Medication, excluding ARV medications is $50 per month for each child
• Educational needs (e.g., public school fees, books, uniforms) are approximately $99 per month for each child in Secondary School and $ 20 per month per child in Primary School.
• Cottage expenses (e.g., school supplies, cleaning materials, staff support) are approximately $225 per month
How Can Individuals or Groups Contribute to Nyumbani:
We welcome individual or group sponsors to assist with our expenses. It is also possible to provide partial sponsorship for any child, cottage or category noted above. For example, you might choose to sponsor a child to help with the child’s educational expenses.
There are also a number of “extras” that donors are invited to help support. These provide for internal and external programs for social, cultural and educational enrichment. Examples of these include:
• Monthly birthday celebrations, including cake, ice cream and gifts at a cost of approximately $150 per month for all the children
• School holiday programs during school vacation months of April, August and December – in addition to our on-site school enrichment and club activities, we try to do one special trip outside of Nyumbani (e.g., to the movies, water park, horseback riding), typically at a cost of approximately $450 for all of the children
• Educational achievement recognition involves hosting a special event for those students who score at the highest levels on their school exams (“the 400 Club”) to an area restaurant (e.g., a pizza party) or attraction, typically at a cost of approximately $250 for the members of the 400 Club
• One time contributions for any identified area of need or an idea you might have are also welcome
• You may also choose to support general expenses whereby your contribution will be allocated to the greatest area of need
The Benefits of Sponsorship and Donations to Nyumbani:
• The joy of knowing that your contribution will help build the future of the children of Nyumbani
• If you are interested, there are opportunities for occasional correspondence with your sponsored child
• If desired, photos and biographical information/history of your sponsored child
• Special thank you gift from the children of Nyumbani (for all singe or yearly contributions over $250)
Any amount of support will help the children of Nyumbani to grow into healthy, strong, productive members of society. Any and all contributions are truly vital to future of the children of Nyumbani. No gift is too small!
