Dentists Sara Gilmer and Carolina Landivar have finished their dental checkups in both Nyumbani Village and Nyumbani Children’s Home. We did a quick preview of their project and trip last week for those who are reading about this for the first time.
In just a week, Gilmer and her assistant Landivar, both from Scotland, completed dental screenings for the children and grandparents of Nyumbani Village. The screenings were done by class in the Village’s clinic with equipment brought over by the Scottish dentists.
After the checkups at the Village, the dentists returned to Nyumbani Children’s Home to provide dental screenings for the children who reside in the home. It is amazing that between just two dentists, over 1,000 children were able to be screened.
The week did not consist of just screenings however. Gilmer and Landivar discussed oral hygiene practices with the children in small class groups. It is very important to reiterate healthy oral hygiene information so the children, especially the younger ones, can properly take care of their teeth.
If a dental issue requiring attention or followup was identified during a check up, it was flagged for a follow up this week. Landivar and two Kenyan dentists returned to the Village this week to provide follow up treatment and procedures.
